Anna Hutton makes drawings and prints that hover between representation and abstraction. They are informed by her response to the wild landscape where she lives in rural Norfolk. A sense of emergence and the indefinite runs through her artistic practice and is carried in her choice and manipulation of material. Her charcoal drawings are fragile and time-consuming as she works over and over the paper surface adding, removing and smudging charcoal and making tiny stippled dots until a balance is found between the ground of paper and her pigment. This activity speaks of a shifting landscape and of nature’s gradual process of loss and renewal. There is an unease to her images and a physical vulnerability to her drawings as the disintegrated charcoal clings only loosely to the paper. Underlying her practice is an awareness of the increasing fragility of our natural world and a question of her own resilience.

Anna was born in Edinburgh in 1972. She lives and works in Norfolk, UK.
